My Friend and fellow Photographer Carissa broke my heart… with this news about PICASA

January 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

From Photography Review Online:
http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/digital-photography-software/browsers-viewers-and-printing/Google/PRD_348284_3080crx.aspx

It’s dishonest to call this software free when the license states that Google has a right to use anything you create, forever, in whatever way they want and whoever they want to give it to.

If you take an amazing photo and save it with Picasa, Google can do whatever they want with it. So it’s free to download, and then you give them the right to exploit you. Maybe that would be a fair trade…except for the fact that you cannot take back that right, even long after the software/service is obsolete and gone. Any semi-serious photographer should be wary about using Picasa!

From the license, read starting the 2nd sentence:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this licence includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.
Strengths:

Good software.
Weaknesses:

You retain copyright but give Google permission to use your content to make more money. Forever.

George Fowler Show

December 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

George Fowler was born on the kitchen floor of a small ranch house in east Texas. In his younger and more formative years George frequented primeval wilderness areas around the world. This caused much of his notions concerning spirituality and awe to be closely associated with the natural world. George believes in the Constructivist notion that art should be based on spiritual expression. A practical background in mechanical engineering can be seen in much of his work. George frequently visits the theme of mechanical elements made beautiful. This is his first solo show and his third year as a professional artist. George has been seen earlier throughout the year at Kettle Art, Space Studio, Studio Fling, Town Square and with the Dallas Nomads.
Two main themes in my work are the synchronicity of disparate elements as well as the contrast of beauty and relative permanence metal affords the sculptor. The piece “Blood in the Resin” incorporates both of these principals. Several layers of metal wire interlace to create the form of a beautiful but intense female representation. Any one of the layers alone would be random abstraction. Seen as a unit, they transcend their humble origins for a loftier goal. The final layer of acrylic resin resounds the negative space and breathes life into cold metal. The metal and thus stable nature of the piece stands in stark contrast to the fleeting illusory beauty of the young woman. In this way the alchemical transformation of base metals into illustrative gold is achieved.

We’re having a party to celebrate George’s amazing work and his first solo show. Come out and see Hal, Cash, and George, December 19; 6 pm until 10 pm. george-fowler-postcard2

This Thursday’s Birthday Party

October 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m having a party.

It’s Thursday. (this one)

I know. (now you do too… please help me in spreading the word)

I suck at getting these announcements out… especially when there is something really big happening.

DETAILS:

Its my official B-Day party and we are having a very special musical guest TARTUFI (top friend) come through from San Fran and they are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G live. I spent some time in their home town with them this fall and they are absolutely beautiful people to be around and I am super excited to introduce them to my friends.

“Tartufi VOTED BEST INDIE BAND of 2007 by the San Francisco Bay Guardian based on their superb ‘06 release, Us Upon Buildings Upon Us, the duo of Lynne Angel and Brian Gorman hew a rich, fractured world out of looped guitars, keys and voices, shape-shifting time sigs, and crashing percussion. They can go from Slint-inspired explosions or Built to Spill epic to Joan of Arc-like baroque or Breeders chug in a measure or two, the shifts revealing unassailable logic as they unfurl. Nine out of 10 buzz bands don’t deserve it; Tartufi does.”-A. Schacht, Creative Loafing (Charlotte, NC)

This is a list party. Its free and BYOB.

We are also TAPING for a TV Show that Time Warner is doing about SPACE. It will be a weekly show that talks about the art, culture, and music in Dallas and around our world in SPACE. You are subject to be on the show with us if you come to the party so be ready to sign a waiver at the door.

This is a list party. Its free and BYOB.

Next- My beautiful angel like friends from Holy Diver will take us through the party hours and spoil us with good times, make your cheeks hurt, teeth white, and wanna dance all night.

Free photos, cake, and candy will be handy. Twizzlers!

You can wear a costume or not.. It’s HAL-O-WEEN EVE so,… just bring your own reality and love.

LILES will DJ at 8
TARTUFI @10p
HOLY DIVER @11p
HOW DO YOU GET ON THE LIST?….

Thank you for your support and another miracle of a year.
